Five Protein Myths That are Messing Up Your Diet Goals

Protein is a nutrient that is needed in building your muscle mass. It can be found in most animal products along with some nuts. Your body requires protein in order to thrive. Your body breaks down the protein which fuels the muscles.

If you are on a high protein diet, you must also work out. The extra protein will go towards muscle, but if you are not working out it will just lead to weight gain. Eating protein will help boost your immune system and keeps you feeling full longer.

Remember to drink a lot of water if you are going to be on a high protein diet. It is important to eat a variety of protein and to eat the right serving size. If you are trying to diet and build muscle, it is important to remember these five myths.

  1. Protein is protein
    • This could not be further from the truth. There are countless different types of proteins and you can get these from numerous different sources. Even people in the nutrition field do not always agree on which kind of protein needs to be consumed most. One thing to consider while you are looking into your diet is the absorption rate. Faster releasing protein are perfect for consuming post workout. Substained-release protein release much slower. It is important to find a protein that is a good mix of both.
  2. Cooking Protein ruins it
    • Again, this is totally not accurate. You cannot erase the protein from your protein shake by cooking it. If you are eating a steak for the protein, it is the same. The steak will keep the same amount of protein regardless of how you cook it. You can even get adventurous and look up recipes that will include protein powder in them for an extra boost. Just keep in mind that with a higher protein intake, you need to drink more water.
  3. Protein diets will make women too manly
    • Being on a high protein diet only will not change your body all that much. It also takes work on your part. If you are going to be hitting the gym multiple times a day, then your muscle gain will be more intense. Just drinking and eating more protein will not have much effect unless you are actually doing your part as well. As stated above, if you are eating and drinking a lot of protein but not working out, you will have more weight gain instead of muscle gain. Some people also believe that eating too much protein can lead to gas, but as long as you are balancing your diet with carbs and other necessities, this should not be an issue.
  4. Protein is not important to endurance athletes
    • Protein is important in every diet, especially any diet involving working out. If you are spending a longer time training your muscles, they need protein to help repair the damage and strain caused by the workout. Most people do not have enough protein in their diet to begin with and adding workouts just makes your muscles crave them more. It is important to remember to replace what you are using during your workout. If you are not eating enough protein eventually your muscles will start to break down. Another myth that goes along with this one is that myth that protein is bad for children. Children are growing rapidly and actually need more protein to help aid them during these growth spurts.
  5. Your body can only handle thirty grams of protein in one sitting
    • This myth can be a pain if you are trying to be on a high protein diet. It can effect how you plan out your meals and shakes. The thing to remember is that to maximize muscle growth you must minimize muscle loss. You can do this by training hard and maintaining a well balanced diet. Along with the added protein, you need to take in more carbs and definitely drink more water.

When you start to plan your diet and exercise plan, it is important to do your research. You do not want to workout hard and be on a low protein diet. You need to make sure that you are eating a well balanced diet and drinking plenty of water. Working out is very important for your weight gain, but you need to be aware of the myths and plan accordingly.

Many people begin their diet and quickly get frustrated with the lack of results. If you do your research and are patient, the results will be worth the wait. Eating protein is an important part of every diet.

If you are trying to loose weight and gain muscle, it is important to replenish what your body is loosing. If you do not replenish it, then your muscles will start to break down. It does not matter what age, gender, of type of athlete you are, everyone needs protein in their diet.
